(Wichita, Kan.) - A statewide Kansas Special Olympics softball tournament held Saturday, July 14, 2007 received support from High Touch, Inc. Nearly 200 athletes from South Central Kansas competed in the second annual Special Olympics hosted softball tournament, says Carol Church, an employee who helped organize the event.

It's more than corporate responsibility that motivates High Touch - an employee-owned business technology solutions provider - to organize the event.

"We do it because of the kids," says Church, "It's worth it when you see them out there. They give their all." And so do High Touch employees who also plan and run the event, seek in-kind and dollar donations, and work every aspect of the tournament including the concession stand.

This is the second year for High Touch to sponsor the Special Olympics softball tournament. "Each year our company selects several different entities to support, and two years ago we chose Special Olympics," says Church.

High Touch hopes to make this an annual event for Special Olympics Athletes. As with any corporate outreach effort, a sense of reward is integral. "With so many great causes to choose from, the Special Olympics tournament is one that High Touch employees find deeply rewarding," says Church.

Kansas Special Olympics South Central Area Director Mitch Guthrie says High Touch had contacted him in 2006 with interest in adopting a corporate project. The softball tournament did not exist at the time, and Guthrie had recently generated enough interest for an event. "I told them about it and said it would be great to have them involved," he says. "Since so many of their employees play softball, it seemed like a good fit." The first year experience of participants was very positive.

"I had so many coaches and athletes thanking me after last year's event," says Guthrie. "I told them to thank the High Touch employees because they're the ones who made everything happen."

Church says additional financial support has been provided by ImageQuest, Superior Building Maintenance and Homeland Foods, and a number of area businesses are donating goods and services:

  • Texas Roadhouse
  • Cargill
  • Hall's Culligan Water
  • Commerce Bank
  • Celebration Cakes
  • Connie's Cookies
  • Cameo Cakes
  • Sara Lee Bakery Group
  • Kansas National Guard
  • Rent-a-Center

The event is organized, staffed and served by High Touch employees, friends and family. "To have a group step up like that, it's really been a blessing," says Guthrie.
